A quick sharp sensation from cold water or a sweet food can be frustrating. Tooth sensitivity is common, but it is not something you need to simply live with. The cause matters because treatment depends on what is making the tooth sensitive.
Common causes of sensitivity
- Worn enamel or exposed root surfaces
- Gum recession
- Tooth decay
- A cracked tooth or leaking restoration
- Clenching or grinding
- Recent whitening or dental treatment
- Acid exposure from frequent acidic foods or drinks
Why an exam is important
Two people can describe the same sensitivity but have very different causes. Dr. Rocha may examine the tooth, check the gums and bite, and use X rays when needed to determine whether the problem is simple sensitivity or something that needs more involved treatment.
What may help
Depending on the cause, treatment may include a sensitivity toothpaste, fluoride, a desensitizing treatment, a filling, a new restoration, a nightguard or other care. Brushing gently with a soft toothbrush can also help protect enamel and gum tissue.
Call promptly if pain changes
Lingering pain, pain when biting, swelling, a cracked tooth or sensitivity that is getting worse deserves a call. Those symptoms may point to a problem beyond routine sensitivity.
Relief starts with knowing what is actually causing the discomfort.
