How Often Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?

Learn how often dental cleanings are recommended and why your schedule may be different from someone else’s.

Dental mirror and preventive care tools for exams and cleanings

Many people have heard that everyone needs a cleaning every six months. That is a useful starting point, but it is not a rule that fits every smile. The right schedule depends on your gums, history of cavities, home care, medical conditions and what your dentist sees during regular exams.

Why cleanings matter

Even with careful brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into tartar in places that are difficult to reach at home. A professional cleaning removes buildup and gives your hygienist and dentist a chance to look for early changes in your teeth and gums.

Six months is common

For many adults and teens with healthy gums and a low risk of decay, visits every six months are appropriate. Regular care can help prevent small concerns from becoming more involved treatment later.

Some people benefit from more frequent visits

Your dentist may recommend a shorter interval if you have gum disease, frequent cavities, dry mouth, certain medical conditions, tobacco use, pregnancy related gum changes or difficulty keeping plaque under control. More frequent hygiene care is not a punishment. It is a personalized prevention plan.

What happens at a cleaning visit?

Your hygienist removes plaque and tartar, polishes your teeth when appropriate and reviews your home care. Dr. Rocha may also perform an exam or discuss anything that needs attention.

Between visits

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Clean between your teeth every day
  • Limit frequent sugary drinks and snacks
  • Call if you notice bleeding gums, sensitivity, pain or a broken tooth

There is no substitute for a personalized recommendation. Your next cleaning interval should reflect your own needs, not just a calendar reminder.
