What to Expect After a Tooth Extraction

Simple aftercare guidance after a tooth extraction and signs that deserve a call to your dentist.

Tooth extraction and aftercare

When a tooth cannot be predictably restored, an extraction may be the healthiest next step. Before treatment, Dr. Rocha will explain why it is recommended, discuss alternatives when appropriate and review the plan for healing and replacing the tooth if needed.

The first day

After an extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket and protects the area as it heals. Follow the instructions you receive from the office. Bite gently on gauze as directed and rest for the remainder of the day when possible.

Protect the healing area

  • Avoid vigorous rinsing, spitting or using a straw right away
  • Choose soft foods and chew away from the area
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of your face if instructed
  • Take medications only as directed by your dentist or physician
  • Keep the rest of your mouth clean with gentle brushing

What can be normal

Mild discomfort, tenderness and some swelling are common in the days after an extraction. Healing is individual, and the office will give you specific instructions based on your procedure and health history.

When to call

Call if bleeding does not slow with the instructions you were given, pain becomes severe or worsens after a few days, swelling increases, you develop a fever or you have any concern about your healing.

Planning what comes next

Depending on the tooth and your goals, replacement options may include an implant, bridge or partial denture. In some situations, bone grafting may be discussed to support future implant treatment.
