Dental crowns

Dental Crowns vs Fillings: How Does a Dentist Decide?

Understand why a filling may be enough for one tooth while another needs a crown.

Tooth-colored filling and conservative restoration

Both fillings and crowns restore damaged teeth, but they do different jobs. The right choice depends on how much healthy tooth structure remains, where the damage is located and how much force the tooth handles when you bite.

When a filling may be appropriate

A tooth colored filling is often a conservative choice for a small to moderate cavity or minor chip. It replaces the damaged area while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible.

When a crown may be recommended

A crown covers and protects the entire visible part of a tooth. Dr. Rocha may recommend one when a tooth has a large old filling, significant decay, a crack, substantial wear or reduced strength after treatment such as root canal therapy.

The goal is not to do more treatment

Recommendations are based on the tooth’s condition and long term outlook. In some cases, a filling is the better choice. In others, a filling may not provide enough support and a crown can help reduce the risk of future fracture.

What crowns are made of

Modern crowns can be made from materials selected for strength and appearance. Your treatment plan will take the tooth location, bite, shade and cosmetic goals into account. Jupiter Smile Care Dentistry works with a high quality outside dental laboratory rather than using a same day crown machine.

Questions worth asking

  • What does the X ray and exam show?
  • What are the benefits and limits of each option?
  • What happens if I wait?
  • How should I care for the restoration afterward?

A clear explanation helps you choose treatment with confidence.
