Root canals

How Long Does Root Canal Treatment Take?

Learn what affects root canal treatment time, when Dr. Rocha refers to an endodontist and how Jupiter Smile Care Dentistry coordinates the final restoration.

How Long Does Root Canal Treatment Take?

When a tooth is painful or infected, one of the first questions patients often ask is how long root canal treatment will take. The answer depends on the tooth, the extent of the infection and the treatment plan recommended by the specialist.

The first step is an evaluation

At Jupiter Smile Care Dentistry, Dr. Christiane Rocha begins by evaluating the tooth and discussing your symptoms. Digital X rays and other testing may be used to help determine whether the nerve inside the tooth is inflamed or infected and whether root canal treatment may be appropriate.

If root canal treatment is indicated, we refer you to a trusted endodontist. An endodontist is a dental specialist with advanced training in diagnosing tooth pain and treating the inside of the tooth.

How long does the specialist appointment take?

Many root canal procedures are completed in one appointment lasting approximately 60 to 90 minutes. Some teeth have more canals or more complex anatomy and may require additional time. A second visit may be recommended when there is significant infection, unusual anatomy or another clinical concern.

The endodontist will explain the expected timing after evaluating the tooth. Treatment time can vary, so an individual recommendation is more useful than a general estimate.

What happens after root canal treatment?

After the endodontist completes treatment, you will return to Jupiter Smile Care Dentistry for the final restoration. Depending on the tooth and how much healthy structure remains, Dr. Rocha may recommend a custom dental crown or another restoration to protect the tooth and restore comfortable function.

Because crowns and other laboratory restorations are created through a high quality outside dental laboratory, the final restoration is completed through a carefully planned process rather than an in office same day crown system.

When should you call?

Contact our office if you have persistent tooth pain, pain when biting, lingering sensitivity to temperature, swelling or a pimple on the gum. These symptoms do not always mean that root canal treatment is needed, but they should be evaluated promptly.

For rapidly spreading swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, or uncontrolled bleeding, seek emergency medical care immediately.

If you are concerned about a tooth, call (561) 844-0715 or request an appointment. Jupiter Smile Care Dentistry is located at 4600 Military Trail, Suite 219, Jupiter, Florida 33458.
