Dental crowns
in Jupiter, FL.
When a tooth needs more support than a filling can provide, a crown may help restore its shape, function and appearance.
Plan your visit
Dental crowns can restore strength, shape and function when a tooth is too damaged or weakened for a smaller restoration. At Jupiter Smile Care Dentistry, Dr. Christiane Rocha evaluates the remaining tooth structure, your bite and the reason the tooth needs treatment before recommending a crown.
When are dental crowns considered?
A crown may be recommended when a tooth has a large cavity, fracture, extensive existing filling, significant wear or another problem that leaves the tooth vulnerable. A crown covers the prepared tooth and is designed to restore its contour and support it during normal function.
Not every damaged tooth needs a crown. In some situations, a filling, bonding, veneer, extraction or another approach may make more sense. The right option depends on how much healthy tooth structure remains and what the tooth must withstand.
How dental crowns are planned
We consider the tooth's shape, shade, position and how it meets the opposing teeth. The process may include preparation of the tooth, a digital intraoral scan or impression, a temporary restoration and placement of the final crown after it is made by our dental laboratory. Jupiter Smile Care Dentistry uses iTero and Medit digital scanning technology and works with an outside dental laboratory rather than offering same-day crowns.
Are dental crowns and caps the same thing?
Yes. “Cap” is a common informal term for a dental crown. Both describe a restoration that covers the prepared portion of a tooth to restore support, shape and function. The material and design are selected for the individual tooth and treatment plan.
How long do dental crowns last?
Crown longevity varies. The tooth, crown material, bite forces, grinding or clenching, oral hygiene, diet and regular dental care can all influence how long a crown remains healthy and functional. Read our detailed guide on how long dental crowns last.
How do I care for a crowned tooth?
A crowned tooth still needs daily brushing and cleaning between the teeth. Regular dental visits allow us to monitor the crown margins, surrounding gums, bite and the tooth underneath. If you notice new sensitivity, pain when biting, looseness or a change in the way your teeth meet, contact the office for an evaluation.
Crown or filling: how is the decision made?
Fillings replace a portion of missing tooth structure, while crowns cover and support more of the tooth. The amount and location of damage are important in deciding which approach is appropriate. Our article on dental crowns vs. fillings explains the differences in more detail.
Can a broken tooth always be crowned?
No. The location and depth of the fracture, the amount of remaining tooth structure and the condition of the root and surrounding tissues all matter. An examination helps determine whether the tooth can be predictably restored.
